UNLV VETERANS HOME PROJECT - Las Vegas, Nevada
(Project Status: Planning)

The Veterans Home Project is a proposal for a public-private partnership to address community housing needs as well as kickstart a Design/Build program at UNLV’s School of Architecture. Working with 5th Year Students and a donated site in the Mid Century Twin Lakes neighborhood of Las Vegas, the 2016 Fall Studio was focused on creating a single family home for a female Veteran currently enrolled at UNLV. At the end of the semester a panel of jurors including former UNLV President Don Snyder chose a design from the students work. Edrick Ferreras’ winning design addressed the studio’s key questions of efficiency in design, budget and construction while honoring the inhabitants and surrounding neighborhood. The students were to be involved in the construction providing invaluable hands-on experience. Material, systems and labor were pledged by several developers and contractors but the project has yet to materialize. New deans at UNLV’s School of Fine Arts and School of Architecture have shown interest in the proposal and housing continues to be an issue for Veteran Students.
