The Pioneer is a 8 unit apartment complex built in 1951. On the surface The Pioneer is a thoughtful remodel well timed to meet a growing demand for housing in Downtown Las Vegas, NV. In other respects, it is a bold experiment in neighborhood and community building as well as preservation. Due diligence before the property’s purchase produced a rich history about a time and neighborhood (Pioneer Heights) that had long been forgotten. In a young city like Las Vegas these stories and sense of place are even more valuable. Working with local architects (Bunnyfish Studios), local artists (Jerry Misko, Scott Seely) and learning from the projects good bones, The Pioneer has made a positive impact. It also serves as the home for two writer-in-residence programs and received the Mayor’s Urban Design Award in 2015.
